Obituary

Joseph Gibbs MacVeigh. Born to the late Francis and Adelaide (nee Sweeny) MacVeigh on St. Patrick's Day, 1932. Passed away April 26, 2016. Gibbs was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Marty (nee Bowyer).

Loving father of Patrick (Kate Kern), Richard (Patti), Timothy (Sally), Thomas (Sherwood) and Christina (Charlie Fletcher) MacVeigh; Margaret (Emerson) Knowles and Elizabeth (Tom) Dulle. Also preceded in death by his twin, Richard P. MacVeigh. Survived by his brother, Robert MacVeigh, and sister-in-law, Elizabeth Bowyer, SNDdeN. Grandfather of 29; Great-Grandfather of 14.

Gibbs played football for and was a graduate of Purcell High School and Xavier University, both of which he supported in many ways during his life. He served in the U.S. Army in Germany before beginning his career at Western Southern where he retired as VP/Treasurer. Gibbs and Marty were avid sailors as members of the Xavier sailing club and eventually racing on the Great Lakes. Gibbs completed over a dozen Chicago-Mackinac races. He devoted his life to his family and his causes including (but not limited to) the following: Every Child Succeeds (Founder), Healthy Moms and Babes (Founder), Determined Young Men, Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce, National Conference of Catholic Bishops, Sisters of Notre Dame, Eastern Catholic Alliance of Schools for Excellence, Glenmary Home Missions, United Way (Hamilton and Clermont Counties), DeSales Corner, St. Francis de Sales Church and School, Catholic Inner-City Schools Education (CISE), Archdiocese of Cincinnati, Friendly Sons of St. Patrick (President 1994), St. Margaret Hall, Calvary Cemetery and Cincinnati Community Action Agency. Gibbs received the following awards/honors: United Way of Greater Cincinnati: Community Service Award 1987, Leadership Award 1978 and 1982, President Award 1985; Purcell High School: Praestens Inter Omnes 1974; Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce: Cincinnati Minority Supplier Development Distinguished Service Award 1985; National Council of Christians and Jews Brotherhood Award 1984; Xavier University: Presidential Citation 1967, Distinguished Alumnus Award 1987, Cincinnati Enquirer: Greatest High School Football Team of the Century, 1949; Cincinnati Community Action Agency Building Bridges to the Future Award 1999; Clermont County Outstanding Senior Citizen 2000; Greater Cincinnati United Way Ruth & Robert Westheimer Award 2002.

Visitation will be Thursday, April 28 4-8pm at Gilligan Funeral Home (2926 Woodburn Avenue). Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, April 29 at 10am at St. Francis de Sales Church (1600 Madison Road).
