Glendon Smith Obituary

Glendon Smith, age 93, passed away peacefully on April 16, 2024, at Haynes House of Hope in Granville, NY.

Glendon, also known as “Glen” and “Smitty”, is survived by his beloved wife Gwendolyn Gillings-Smith, daughters Kathi (Jim) Garner, Pamela Schappacher, adopted daughter, Paula Whittamore, and step-children, Karen (John) Harvey and Andrew (Tabitha) Gillings. Glen was the loving Grandfather to Tom, Sarah, J.R., Scotty, and Richelle; as well as 18 great-grandchildren: Christopher, Johnathan, Brandon, Breanna, Tanner, Jaycob, Jordyn, Aubrey, Ava, Alaina, Mason, Damon, Kayla, Olivia, Owen, Isaac, Loretta, and Richmond and 5 great great-grandchildren: Blake, Mason, Braxton, Laine, and Mila. Glen is also survived by his sister, Carol Sparrow.

Glen was preceded in death by his parents, Dellie and Maxie Smith, his first wife and mother of his children, Alma Smith, his son Rick A. Smith, two granddaughters, Emily and Lidia, as well as siblings, Wilma, Leon, Jeanette, James, and Wayne.

Glen was born November 1, 1930, in Newport, KY. He attended Newport High School until he entered the service at age 17. His Army career consisted of various tours of duty throughout the U.S., as well as a stint in Korea in 1950. Throughout his service, he was decorated with several medals including a UN Service Medal, a Korean Service Medal with Arrowhead, and Four Bronze Stars.

After his service years, he resided in Cincinnati, OH, where he raised his family. He made a life-long career at Cincinnati Gas & Electric (currently Duke Energy), retiring after 40+ years as District Manager.

Glen was a Mason for 50+ years, and a very active Shriner, serving as Captain of Marching Sheiks and Legion of Honor Commander. He also served as Honor Guard with the Scottish Rite.

Glen had a stroke in June 2022 which affected his physical activities. Until then, he led an active lifestyle. He loved traveling, boating, and his family vacations in the early years which was mostly camping every year. He was an avid golfer and played that and volleyball into his 80’s. He also enjoyed watching Wheel of Fortune daily.

Glen was happily married to Gwen the last 15 years. They alternated residences between Schroon Lake, NY and Venice, FL. They share their life with Glen’s best and loyal companion, Archie, his Sheltie fur-baby.

Visitation, Sunday, April 28, 2024 beginning at 11:00am with a Funeral Service to follow at 1:00pm, Gilligan Funeral Home, 8225 Montgomery Rd 45236. Burial will take place thereafter, at Spring Grove Cemetery, 4521 Spring Grove Ave 45232. A Celebration of Life reception will take place after burial at Wiedemannn’s Brewery & Taproom, 4811 Vine St. 45217.
